Bento, as I understand it, is a meal set comprised of several foods which are usually distributed individually over several compartments of one container.

People bring it for lunch at work, and it is also very popular to eat it while traveling on the Japanese bullet train shinkansen.

While it is not uncommon to prepare bento on yourself, it is also readily available at train stations. And of course, there are vending machines for it too.

While eating is common on the shinkansen, on local trains, it is considered indecent.
